St Joseph Safety
All members of the Catholic school community, including volunteers and visitors, must not:
Engage in bullying behaviours.
Commit sexual assault.
Traffic weapons or illegal drugs.
Give alcohol to a minor.
Commit robbery.
Be in possession of any weapon, including firearms.
Use any object to threaten or intimidate another person.
Cause injury to any person with an object.
Be in possession of, be under the influence of, or provide others with alcohol or illegal drugs.
Inflict or encourage others to inflict bodily harm on another person.
Engage in hate propaganda and other forms of behaviour motivated by hate or bias.
Commit an act of vandalism that causes extensive damage to school property or to property located on the premises of the school.
Use electronic devices during instructional activities unless such equipment is deemed necessary and directed by staff to achieve curriculum expectations of a Catholic school.
GENERAL RULES:
To a large extent, students are expected to use common sense (i.e. hands to themselves, feet on the ground and be kind) in their day‐to‐day dealings at school in helping build and sustain community with others.
1. Be Respectful
Treat all classmates, teachers, staff, bus drivers, and bus monitors with kindness and courtesy.
Listen when others are speaking.
Use appropriate language and tone.
Remove hats when entering our school and practice intentional courtesy.
Respect others’ personal space and belongings. Follow the directions of staff members, bus drivers and bus monitors.
2. Be Responsible
Arrive on time and be ready to learn each day.
Come prepared with all necessary materials (notebooks, pens, devices, etc.).
Complete assignments on time and to the best of your ability.
Ask for help when needed.
3. Follow Instructions
Listen carefully and follow directions from the teacher or supervising adult.
Stay on task during work time.
Use technology and classroom tools appropriately.
4. Stay Safe
Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Use equipment and classroom materials safely and as instructed.
Report unsafe behaviour or concerns to a trusted adult immediately.
5. Contribute Positively
Participate in class activities and discussions.
Support others’ learning by being a team player.
Take responsibility for your actions, including mistakes.
Be inclusive with others in class, on the yard and in all school activities
Good judgment is the criterion for acceptable dress.
The students of St Joseph Catholic Elementary School are expected to demonstrate respect for self, fellow students, and staff by dressing appropriately for school.
Sexist, racist, and drug and alcohol-related clothes or violent slogans are not acceptable.
Logos, graphics or words must have positive messages that reflect our Catholic School Values.
Outside shoes are not to be worn in the classroom and are to be left neatly in the hallway.
Indoor running shoes are to be worn in the gym. Sandals and flip-flops are not safe for these activities.
It is recommended that items left at school be marked with a form of identification.
Backs and stomachs should always be covered (No bare midriffs).
Shorts and skirts should be at an appropriate length and not too short for activities (mid-thigh length).
Hats or hoods should not be worn in the building unless it is a special Spirit Day.
Spaghetti straps or tops that leave shoulders bare are not permitted.
Undergarments must be covered at all times.
Sturdy shoes, i.e. running shoes, should be used for outdoor play.
Jewelry will not be worn during physical education classes or during team sporting events.
Students wearing inappropriate clothes will be asked to change and/or have their clothing turned inside out, or wear a school jersey.
Students without clothes to change into may be given clean clothing from the office if they cannot be provided from home.
